You’re just getting fired
That’s it!
6 years of work just ended like that!
It was not a beautiful morning. The revenue keeps on dropping.
You tried everything. You could feel that your colleagues are exhausted long before you were
Then a reminder from your boss:
“The company is not doing so well. I will keep you updated”
Then, time flew…
You didn’t remember much of it.
You didn’t remember what the managers said.
This was not about the work nor the stress, your colleagues didn’t even like you that much. They didn’t know your jobs well and had been hard on you for such a long time.
But this itchy feeling…
It is the habit of having this job. You knew what they wanted. What was needed to be done..
Where things are..
How to do it..
But still, the Marketing department had to be cut in half.
You had to go…
You got it. The revenue wasn’t big enough. The board had no other choices.
But still, you felt uncomfortable, angry and discomforted
20 days left
Your last day is 30th this month.
You have to hand over your work, your accounts… basically your trademark.
The marks that you have been here.
You keep telling yourself “It’s just a job”
But honestly, it hurts like hell.
You know your ego is hurt, but still, something ached inside your mind and your heart. It’s not about the money, .you still have ways to earn it.
It’s about something that you’ve dedicated to do it, argue about it for such a long time…
You are just not willing to let go
Then, you start to delay.
You don’t want to do the handover
Todo list in the last week of work to ease your pain?
Treat your handover like your achievements
Instead of treating this like a task having to do, look at it as proof of your hard work. Writing things down, the process of doing it and quick notes for your colleagues.
Save achievement for your portfolio
Before you lose access to your accounts, save your best work examples, reports, and templates to your personal drive. You will need these for your portfolio later. But keep in mind that you will have to re-read the NDA to ensure that you aren’t carrying troubles later on.
Remove you off the system
- Log out of work accounts on your personal devices.
- Re-connect with people on LinkedIn.
- Clear your personal passwords and browsing history from work computers.
This job is in your past
Keep reminding yourself “This is just a handover, you’ve done this before”. You do not need to teach them how to be smart or fix their mistakes. Just give them basic passwords, links, and quick steps. Keep it simple.
Work in short 30-minute bursts
When you feel like delaying, set a timer for 30 minutes. Write one simple document, then stop and take a break. Small steps make it much easier to get it over with.
Stop fixing company problems
I know that you’re dedicated, but this is your time. Other opportunities are out there for you. Look at the future, use your past work to reach to the future, do not let your previous achievement hold you back.
People often sleep on their victory, they forget that they need to move on!
If something breaks at work this week, leave it alone. The company’s future is no longer your problem to solve. Focus only on your basic exit tasks.
Leave work on time
You do not need overtime. You do not need to work late to finish handover files. When your workday ends, live your life. Spend your evening resting, eating good food, or focusing on your personal projects.

Write down your feelings on a private piece of paper
This is actually why I am writing this post. Write a letter to yourself about your anger, sadness, and pride. Be honest.
Plan your temporary vacation
I know that you don’t want this vacation, but to avoid feeling lost, plan your first day off. Whether you plan to sleep in, go somewhere fun, or organize your freelance work, give your brain something positive to look forward to.
In summary
The last week of work is never going to get easier. You will doubt yourself, you will cry and blame yourself (or even others). That’s the natural feeling of being left out.
It’s ok, this is work and this is reality. You don’t have to deal with it. Let it deal with itself. Let the tears pour out, let yourself feel like a loser. You will be just fine!
