Cleaning bathroom every Saturday

It was the weekend morning, instead of sleep in, I woke up at 4.30am, started cooking and did housework till noon.

I went to a bathroom to take a number 2, then I realized that the bathroom was dirty.

The scene made me forget what I was about to do. I grabbed a brush and cleaning detergent, and started sweeping the floor until my back was sweaty. The process took around 1 hour.

I was exhausted but happy. Then, I took a shower and passed out while holding my baby in my arms.

Should I clean up my workspace?

When helping to install Claude Code, my husband said that my MacBook storage was a mess which I needed to clean it up. I used Claude to organize files and send gigabytes of digital clutter straight to the Trash.

Before that, I had 3 or 4 project files for every single task, scattered across Notion notes and random Download folders. My Notion loaded so slow, I couldn’t even remember what files existed, which made starting work every morning difficult.

Spending time re-allocating and purging those files gave me the exact same satisfaction as stepping onto that freshly scrubbed bathroom floor.

File-cleaning philosophy

Purge the biggest folders first

Start where the chaos in your Downloads folder and Desktop, as most of your junks are stored in there automatically.

• If you haven’t opened a file in the last 60 days, it goes straight to the Trash.
• Delete installers and zip files with tails “.dmg, .pkg, .zip”. Installer files should. Immediately go to Trash after installing.
• Screenshots: Select all Screenshots into one folder and drag them to the Trash frequently. If a screenshot was important, it should have been pasted into a note or re-named.

“Single Source of Truth”

Having 3 to 4 files for a single task is what makes your brain panic every morning. Stop creating a new document every time you have a micro-thought.

• Group your stray drafts into a single master folder per project, then rename them properly, for example: [Project Name] / Ideas).
• Review your input frequently: the working ones go into your work pipeline, others saved to “read-later”. That “read-later” docx should only be in your computer for 6 months maximum.

Let Local AI do the heavy lifting

If you’re on a Mac and feeling adventurous, you don’t have to drag every file manually.

• Find hidden monsters: Use Mac’s built-in storage tool (System Settings > General > Storage) to instantly spot giant cache files, old iOS backups, or large video renders taking up tens of gigabytes.
• Easy way out: Use Claude Code/ Terminal. You can just ask Claude: “Clean up my desk”, then your local AI assistant will list files larger than 100MB or scan for duplicate files. Let the machine identify the trash so you just have to hit “Approve.”

Empty the trash

Normally, Claude Code won’t delete your files straight away, Claude will send those to draft for your final review. Now, the decision is yours, you can satisfyingly click: Empty Trash, or review them one last time before saying good buy.

The aftermath

Watch the storage bar turn green again, restart your computer, and take a deep breath. Just like stepping into a freshly scrubbed bathroom, opening a clean desktop tomorrow morning is going to feel like a complete reset.
